Tips For Being A Good Unboxer
January 21, 2012 We've watched a lot of electronic products unboxing videos on YouTube. But only a few from them are good such as DetroitBORG and SoldierKnowsBest (make sure to follow them on Twitter and subscribe on YouTube! P/S: It's @SoldierKnowBest on Twitter. Take off the s of the "Knows"). Many of them do it with impatient and bad camera shot. Anyway, here are tips if you want to start being an unboxer. Follow these steps if you decide to be a good one.
1. Don't get too excited
Many unboxer on YouTube open the packaging of their product with lack of patience and they are careless. Try to relax. Yes, I know it feels great to get on your new gadget but when you are over-excited, the packaging may be ruined when you tear them off. Before you start recording your video, take a look on the pack and find how to open it properly. I also have watched a video which the unboxer dropped his brand new Apple iPod classic 6th generation. One of the worst unboxing video I've ever seen.
2. Make sure you always got something to say
Before you start the job, write and memorize the transcript first. What you need to say on the video. Include some specification details and the evolution history if the product had previous generations. Tell them the material used to make the gadget if it's different or rare compared to the other brand. The software installed, other variants available and what are new features that should be added to the product in the future. Don't repeat same facts again and again. Simply tell the viewers about the product with interesting tones. Also control your breath. Don't breathing with noisy sound. It will reduce the clarity of your voice.
3. Stabilize your camera
Don't hold the camera using your hand. Get the camera on your head using special strap or if you have other better ideas, just use your own. Get a light on the camera to avoid the video become dim. And don't move your camera frequently. Make it stay still in a position close to the product.
4. Edit your video
Sometimes the packaging become very complicated to be teared off. Or maybe you took too long time looking for the starting point of the wrapper tape. These will make your video boring and take longer time to buffering on the web. Cut all those unwanted scenes nicely. Add some simple effects such as fading out the video.
5 . Have an unboxing knife with you
I can't believe there's a lot of unboxers out there who didn't have a knife or scissors with them while they're tearing off the cellotapes from the box. Don't use your bare hand to do this job as it will ruin your whole product packaging. And use them carefully. Don't press the knife too deep as it will maybe scratch your product inside.
6. Show the whole packaging to audiences
Some unboxers really did what the video is about - unboxing. They just simply tear off the plastics, pull the wrapper and get the product inside out one by one. Show around the whole box to camera. What is printed on the box, some interesting information may be there to be showed. And if you own the previous generation of the product, or the same kind of product but manufactured by other brand, why don't you compare them together?
So, I wrote these guide from my experience watching tons of unboxing videos on YouTube as I keep myself on it for hours but spending only a few minutes in Facebook. What I said above are most common mistakes of YouTube unboxers have done. It's not a full manual on unboxing skill. Learn from other's mistakes and take advantage of them to make your perfect one!
